I’m not a big Donny Deutsch fan or anything. For one thing, in his latest rant, he makes the mistake of suggesting that Trump is actually good for the economy, when he’s anything but. (Do any of these fools understand that job growth has actually slowed considerably under Trump?)

But I have to give Deutsch credit for at least one thing: He destroys the argument — apparently espoused by some of the white folks Deutsch hangs with — that it’s okay to vote for Trump because he’s supposedly a boon to the economy.

Straight fire here:

“Enough is enough, and I want to talk to the white people out there. Okay? I want to talk to wealthy white people. Because I’ve had it. I’ve had discussions when I talk to friends, people I know, ‘He’s good for the economy, but he’s good for the economy. They’re all jerks anyway.’ No, no, it’s time. By the way, if you’re somebody who’s poor, and you believe Donald Trump is going to get you a job, maybe you don’t have the luxury of a moral imperative, okay? But everybody else, shame on you at this point.

“Enough. This is where you stand up, and if you don’t, you own it. And I talked about this yesterday. You are no different than, if you are on a subway train, and you saw four white nationalists screaming at an African-American woman, ‘Go home, go back where you came from!’ If you vote for Trump, it’s like you’re going like this [looks down]. And own it. No more ‘he’s good for the economy,’ no more ‘well, they’re all jerks, he just says these things.’ We are heading to such a dangerous place. And guess what? You look at history, it can happen here. Maybe it’s the Jews next. Oh, oh, oh, I forgot, his daughter is married to a Jew. Who says? Who says?

“And I come from a place, I come from a group of people where it happened to — 6 million of them. And I’m not saying Trump is that person, but every playbook that’s happening, every single playbook — creating the other, getting rich people to look the other way, getting people to not trust the press, getting the judicial system in your pocket, getting an entire branch of government, the legislative branch, the Republicans, to just march with you. To act above the law, to say that you’re going to put your adversaries in jail. … And now, hey you, dark person, if you don’t like it here, go back from where you came. Boy, it’s time for us, and time for white people, who maybe it’s not so great for your pocketbook, go in and look at your children and decide who you are.”

As a white person who is increasingly embarrassed for my fellow melanin-deficient travelers, I have to say, I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Even if the economy really were the best in history (it’s not), and even if Donald Trump were helping to boost our fortunes (he isn’t), it would be no excuse for throwing all our values into a wood chipper because we want a new backsplash in the kitchen.

The very thought of it is disgusting. Are we really willing to trade our democracy for a little extra spending money? 

What has this country become?

Thanks, Mr. Deutsch, for pointing out our creeping moral decrepitude. Hopefully more of us will wake up to this clear and present danger — before it’s far too late.
